    Hauptmann Achim Beyer, DKIG winner

I'm looking for any additional information for a Hauptmann Achim Beyer who served with the reserves of the 1st Battalion of Grenadier Regiment 508, 292 Infantry Division.

I understand that the 292 and the 508 fought exclusively on the eastern front and for the largest portion of the war was a part of the 2nd Army, Army Group Center. In 1943, the 292 and 508 fought in the battle of Kursk and later at the battle for the Gomel Bridgehead. In 1944, as still a part of the 2nd Army and Army Group Center, the Division and the Regiment fought mostly in the areas of the Pripyet Marshes. Beyer was awarded his German Cross in Gold on September 28, 1944, most likely as a result of the battles around Bereza Kartuska in July of 44 (I'm told it was typical for a German Cross award to take about 2 months to be approved).

I have his service tunic (a standard enlisted tunic upgraded to Hauptmann rank), cigarette case, a locker-type tag, and a tiny "Beyer" inkstamp.

Beyond wanting to learn more in general, one specific question I have is regarding the 292 Infantry Division. I'm told this was a panzergrenadier division. Is this in fact correct, and would it makes sense for my tunic to have infantry-piped boards (and not panzergrenadier-piped boards)?

Thanks for any insight on this officer and his regiment or division.

    292nd was an Infanterie-Division, not a Panzergrenadier-Division.

    see http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/...en/292ID-R.htm for basic information.

The site owner of the lexikon-der-wehrmacht published a photo history book of the division.

        question...

How would I go about researching any information regarding this front fighter, Achim Beyer? I don't know if he survived the war, but I do know Beyer was awarded his German Cross in Gold on September 28, 1944...

Also, is there a way to do so when one doesn't speak German?

You will most likely need to hire someone to do the research for you and then to translate the findings. The links will help.
