Luftwaffe shoot down help..

This seemed the right place to post this. I have acquird the engraved medals of USAAC 1stLT Stanley Rames. He was a figher pilot w/ the 375 FTR which flew P-47s and P-51s while escorting US bombers. He is listed as having shot down a BF-109 on 4/29/44. I'm trying to ascertain the unit to which the Luftwaffe fighter belonged, and perhaps even the pilot. Rames would have been flying a P-47 that day...most likely his personal aircraft "Shiverless". A link to the US forum thread where I discuss the medal group is here:

There is about a 50% chance of answering your question provided you have the exact location of his claim and the exact time of day. Without that information, there is almost no chance. The Luftwaffe aircraft loss reports (BA-MA Freiburg: RL 2 III Meldungen über Flugzeugunfälle bei den fliegende Verbände) are all missing for calendar year 1944 and have never been found. So it would be a matter of looking through the published histories of Luftwaffe fighter units that were flying the Bf 109 in April 1944 and hoping for potluck.
