    machine Gun Battalions

I am trying to find something out before a possible purchase and need some help.

With a Machine gun battalion, were they named to a division (i.e shoulderboards with an 'M' and number 14 in the case of the 14th Infantry Division or would it be an 'M' + the number of the infantry Regiment within the division...or would it be some independant unit with a unique number assigned to the battalion within division?

I have a couple sources for the OOB of this division but I see no mention of a machine gun battalion...HELP!

    Hello Fran.
M.G. Batallions were "Heerestruppen" or formations at the disposal of and allocated by High Command on a need basis to selected higher formations such as Divisions or Army Corps and subordinated to them temporarily. The numerals displayed on the shoulderbords indicated the Battalion Number.
M.G. Btl. 14 was formed in Nov. 1038 and deployed in the Western Theatre 1939 - 1940 and from 1941 in Finland until 1944. It was last part of the M.G. Ski Brigade Finland .
