      Hi Guys, once again thank you for all the positive comments. I have not yet started researching the grouping and would appreciate any advice on where best to go for information. You guys have already mentioned some interesting facts which I was not aware of.

      Yes I got the grouping from the family through a trusted source.

      I have an original negative and interestingly also a photo of a painting of Franz which I believe was in the town hall and painted by his local town fathers in honour of his receipt of the RK.

      I was also told that he burnt his uniforms at the end of the war.

        Robb mcdivitt does a great job researching ss men , he researched a ss officer for me and he found 19 documents and 3 fotos in the national archives . his price is reasonable as well !! its a pity about his uniforms but i suspose so many ended up this way at the wars end , please keep us posted regarding the research

            I second John’s recommendation. I own a copy of this book and it's simply a wealth of information to anyone wishing to research Wittmann (obviously) but also the armored branch of the LSSAH.

            Another book I highly recommend is Jochen Peiper: Commander, Panzerregiment Leibstandarte also by Agte. I own a copy of this book as well, and unlike the Wittmann book, this one covers the s.SS.Pz.Abt.501’s activities.

            Both would help you research the unit(s) in general, but for individual research you should – without a doubt – contact either Robert McDivitt or John Moore. Both are the leading authorities on individual research and should be able to help you with your research.

              And here's a little information on Staudegger's unit in the Ardennes Offensive ... Staudegger was the only LSSAH Tiger RK-träger still in the field with the unit during the Ardennes. Unfortunately, I don't know much about his actions in that battle.

                  Yesterday evening I came across the copy of the RK-Vorschlag. It was in Agte's Wittmann book. The Vorschlag was signed by Schönberger and approved by Wisch!
                  But you were right since the Div. change was still pretty fresh at this time it could have been possibly Dietrich.

                    Thanks John, I have bought the "Michael Wittmann and the Tiger Commanders of the Leibstandarte by Patrick Agte" book and started reading it last night. I was amazed that Staudegger was not at all liked by his comrades. Does anyone know how I can contact Patrick Agte. I would like to know if he interviewed Staudegger.

                    I was told that the attached photo is from a painting done by the farthers of the town where Staudegger came from after he won the RK. Can anyone give me some more information on it?
