JG 26 - Help Please

Hi Everybody,

I'm trying to research one Karl Schieffer. He was awarded the EK2 on the 11 October 1940, as a member of 5./JG 26

and subsequently awarded the EK1 (II./JG 26) on 3 December 1940.

I have not attempted to research an individual before so have no idea where to begin (other than this forum)!

Also (please excuse my ignorance) can someone explain the prefixes (i.e. 5. and II.) before JG 26?

Is there a means of establishing specifically why he was decorated?

Any help much appreciated.
