    Radfahr-Aufklärungs-Brigade Norwegen

    Grüß Gott Kameraden,

Does anyone have any information about this unit, Radfahr-Aufklärungs-Brigade Norwegen? Thanks in advance.

Originally formed as a regiment in April 1944 and assigned to the XIX Geb.Korps it consisted of 2 abteilung of 4 schwadronen each. The I abteilung was the renamed Gebirgs Aufklarungs Abteilung 95, the former recce unit of the 3 GD which had stayed behind in Norway when the division left for the Eastern front. The II abt. was the renamed 233 Aufklarungs Abteilung, formerly of the 196 Inf Div. Commander of the brigade throughout it's existence was Oberst Dittrich Frhr. von Berlichingen-Jagsthausen (descendent of G******246;tz von Berlichingen)

Here's an example of his signature on a Lappland doc in my collection.

The regiment became a brigade in July 44. During the Soviet offensive of Oct. against the XIX Geb.Korps. the brigade was under the command of the 2 GD on the Southern flank of the front. According to figures i have it suffered a total of 131 KIA, 278 WIA and 230 MIA during that offensive.

Retreating into Norway the brigade was moved to an area just North of Narvik. Around the end of '44 or early '45 it looked like this.

Sometime in early '45 it was decided to not only bring the brigade back up to strength but to increase it's size by apparently renaming the stab schwadron of each abteilung the 5 and 10 respectively and adding an 11 sturm schwadron and a 12 geschutz schwadron so that in a TO&E dated 1 May '45 the brigade looked like this. Numbers wise it had a strength of 1600 men.

Note how the I abt. (the old Geb.AA 95) is still designated a Gebirgs unit. during the final months of the war it, along with Panzer Abt.211 formed the German mobile reserve in the area of Armee Abteilung Narvik and the LXXI Armeekorps.
