    Search for Officer who fell in Stalingrad

    Hello all,
    A friend of mine is trying to track down information on his Grandfather. The family name is either WOLLENSACH or WOLLENSACK. His Grandfather was suppose to hold the rank of either Oberstleutnant or Oberst when he was killed in Stalingrad. Possibly someone has an officer list where this name appears? Anything will be appreciated as his Grandmother will not discuss the war years and my friend would like to find out as much as he can about his Grandfather's Military service.

    Do a reattack on your friend regarding the spelling, first name and branch of service. I looked in the Heer '39 & 44 rank lists and there is nobody with a name even remotely close to that (44 stands to reason, but he would have been in the '39 list if he was an Oberstleutnant at Stalingrad). Also, the War Graves lists a guy named Erich Wollensack who got killed in Russia, based on the date I'd say Stalingrad, but he was only 23 years old. They don't list his rank and I don't think he'd be an Oberstleutnant at 23 because he doesn't show-up on the DK or RK lists.

      Thank you very much for your reply! I passed your information along to my friend and he does recall that his Grandfather's first name may have been Erich. He will contact his Mother and see if he can get more information. As for his Grandfather's rank he recalled that he was once told his Grandfather was a "Colonel" but had he held this rank in Stalingrad he would have without a doubt appeared on the 1939 rank list. We will post additional information when we obtain it. Thanks once again Bob for your response!
