Tombstone of a german police soldier

I found this wood tombstone in a museum that now has been closed, in north Italy. The old man , owner of that museum, found this tombstone on the ground of a mountain lake in 1946, since he was a "hunter" of old WW1 explosives, still existing today in high mountain zone.
About 10 years ago he sold this to me.
The tombstone is of a police soldier (I see from the rank of Zugw.)and, probably he died during an antipartisan action.
The tombstone is very very heavy, long 1,60 meters, and very well made with decoration, therefore I belive he was an important (or lovable soldier).
Time ago I found him in the cemetery of Costermano (Verona, north Italy),where there are about 22000 german soldier.I was happy to know to have been found him there, but I do not know nothing about this soldier.
It will be possible to know something? From the family name he is maybe austrian, since some time I have seen austrian track with that name .
I hope that somebody will help me in this research.
    Thanks

On the top of the cross, in the middle, there is a space in the wood, maybe for a photo?

Polizei regiment Alpenvorland began forming in June 1944. IV\ Pol.Rgt. 'Bozen' was redesignated I\Pol.Rgt. 'Alpenvorland' It's commander was an Oberst Koellner. The book 'The German police' states it was formed from a cadre of German police with the bulk of the regiment being made up of ethnic German Italians. The regiment performed security duties in the Bolzano region.
