    Gumrak - Stalingrad

Gumrak is about 20 km. west of Volgograd (Stalingrad).

        ........

        Thats awesome!

Do you have a map with GOMCAR (spelled in cirillic like a half F-OMYAP) or GUMNIK (FYMH-Backwards N and K FYMHNK)..

These are suburbs of stalingrad where my wifes grandfather was killed at gomcar.

        Thanks,

        Pete

            Gumrak! Goncary?

No reference to a village on any Russian 1937, 1940, 1942, 1970’s- 2004 maps I have in my collection.

It looks like the area is now incorporated within the current airport boundaries near Gumrak.

              ........................

              Nope!

Cancel my last message, i just edited this. Goncari is written in cyrillic slanting upwards to the right in the larger airport map you just sent on the maps bottom left above the number 115. Its on the left side of the airport. It looks like yp. FoHyapbl (dont have a cyrillic keyboard).. theres a downward pionting arrow next to it. I take it this was an area of a village at one time still called for it maybe? Its clear though that smack dab where goncari village was in the airport now....This was the area the 369th croatian moved through on 26th sept 42 as they were moving up to the front line to join up with the 227th inf regt around red oktober factory.....I wonder were any croat graves found or moved while they built that airport???

              Thanks!

                  ...................

Many thanks for the info. I have gotten a reply from someone with access to the surviving war diary of the 369th croatian legion at the state as well that was unread since march 04. I now have in conjunction with that casualty and bravery award information that was not available all through the former regimn in croatia (yugoslavia) and i will be presenting to my wifes father tommorow. The details about the final story of what happened to his father and where, when he was killed, and most likley what he was doing around the gumrak area were previously limited to that he was killed at stalingrad only as a corporal. I have now found he was a cpl promoted to postumous LT with the Zvornimir medal, winterschlat and others.

Kind regards, and thanks for helping to bring this back from the sands of time before it was too late for his son. Not even his wife knew what happened to her husband at stalingrad and these details were not talked about during communisim.
