    Opa

Gent's, my Mother is here on a visit and we are going to start trying to get information out of Germany on her fathers military record and his brother who was killed on the Don Boggin.

My question is; Will WAST also be able to provide military records on those who did not die during the war? I saw on the request form that they ask how much I would be willing to spend... is 100 Euro's enough for a good search?

    Thanks!

    Hi Robert,

If you are a relative and they have the info they will send it.....obviously there will be a larger fee than the €8-€32 they expect for non-relatives.

It all depends what info they still have on the person, if he was killed in action then they could have his Soldbuch and Wehrpaß. Otherwise his Wehrpaß only if he was not discharged, however this was kept by his unit and I do know they were handed out at the end of the war by some unit clerks.

They could have his Wehrstammbuch but these were held by the Wehrmeldamt/Wehrbezirks where he joined up. As long as they were not destroyed by allied bombing and returned to the WASt at the wars end you could be in luck.

You will need his name, date and place of birth and how you are related.

Perhaps leave the form empty regarding how much you are willing to spend.....I doubt it will run in to hundreds of Euros

        Hi Robert,

Yes they do have Kriegsmarine documents....for some reason these appear to be more intact and more info is available.

                        Robert,

My Opa died in 1998 - he was Luftwaffe. It took 6 months, but one day most unlooked for, there was a letter from WAST with his records. They did not seem to care he had died within ten years. Then I got a letter about his brother stating I needed a signed affidavite from his closest surviving relative, plusa copy of the death certificate, since he had died less than ten years ago. So they can be a little inconsistent.
                        Best of luck!
                        Marc

                          Flak,

Thank you for this info. My Opa died in 68 and by that time had lived a pretty tough life; He was with Org. Todt in 1938, drafted 1939 to 1945 and then spent 2 years in a POW camp.

He fathered 6 children and was by trade a blacksmith. My mother filed the paperwork under her name in hopes that as his daughter she would be able to get his records... we shall see.

                          Regards,
                          Robert
