    Aufklärer Unit Help

    Hello all,

I have three documents awarded to the same man for Frontflugspange für Aufklärer in Bronze & Silver with Felpost number 19559 year 1941 and Frontflugspange für Aufklärer in Gold with number 01777 year 1942 (I think im correct on the dates but left the docs at home)
Could anyone tell me areas of operation and aircraft type likely to have been flown as I want to display them and would like to put a photo, unit emblem and map etc, with them.

This rings a bell. Is this the set to Leutnant Hermann Deutsch?

19559 belonged to the stab Küsten fliegergruppe 706

    01777 to stab Aufkl.Gruppe 125 (See)

Looking through both units what i think happened was that he first belonged to the stab of 706 which you'll note was based out of Trondheim (the seaplane base there is actually a good few miles outside of town at a place called Hommelvik) during the time he was awarded his bronze and silver clasps before moving North up to where i live, Tromsø, or rather the seaplane base of Skattøra and Sørreisa, another seaplane base a couple of hours drive away. Then around the end of '41 i think he was likely transferred to 1./125 which was the only staffel of the gruppe based in North Norway, in this case out of Billefjord which is a good ways further North from Tromsø and quite near the well known LW airfield of Banak. Both of the units flew the Bv138 and i think it's likely that's the primary type he flew. These seaplne units were engaged in maritime recconnaissance work, along the long Norwegian coast, the North Sea and the arctic sea, hunting for and shadowing the Murmansk convoys. Looking at the date, unit and location of his Gold award i'd say there was more than a fair chance this guy was involved in shadowing the famous PQ17 convoy.

If you PM me your E-mail address i'll send you some photos of Skattøra, Sørreisa and Billefjord.

A good book for you to get with plenty of photos of both the Bv138 and the various bases i've mentioned is "Luftwaffe Seaplanes 1939-1945"

I get doofus of the week award Whilst i remembered Deutsch's 3 clasp docs for sale a couple of years ago i managed to completely forget that i bought his EKII and EKI just 6 months or so ago. Also that he was, at least at the times of his EK awards with Küstenflieger staffel 3./906 Which does actually fit in with units mentioned above.
