    Hello Mike.

You probably already consulted the Ritterkreuz site for this recipient and would have found dates and unit assigned to when awarded the R.K. Also a possible cause of death is given there.
The Biblio reference book on recipients of the R.K. of the Gebirgstruppen , part one gives the location of Hptm. E.Altacher as near Kirkenes in Oct.1944. Kirkenes was evacuated the 25.Oct.1944 using Norwegian National Route 50. This route was to have been kept clear of Soviet efforts to cut it. The Geb.Jg.Rgt. 143 of the 6.Geb.Div. of which Hptm. Altacher temporarily commanded the II.Btl. received the task of keeping this vital route clear thus covering the retreat of the division. He distinguished himself to the extent to warrant the award of the R.K. The R.K. was then awarded with date of 18.Nov.1944.
Hptm.Altacher was assigned to further training in Germany and finally to the Geb.Jg.Schule Mittenwald effective Feb.1945. This book gives his death as having occurred sometime in April 1945 without a cause of death indicated. Burial on 28.Apr.1945 in Neu-Ulm.

I'm finally back from my travels. Amongst other places, i've visited the place where Altacher won his RK, the small village of Nieden which lies on an important and easily defensible river. The signs of battle there are still to be seen and i will be writing up my report on this and other places i visited over on the living history forum soon.

By the way, What's your interest in Altacher?
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.
