    Infantry Regiment 17

    Hi,
I am looking for some information on the war record and battle orderof this Regiment. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Martin, 17th Infantry Regiment was part of the 31st Infantry Division redesignated a Volksgrenadier Division in 1944. The division fought in Poland in 1939, then shifted west and fought in Belgium and France in 1940. It was involved in the invasion of Russia with the 2nd Panzer Army in the central sector. It suffered serious losses in the Russian winter offensive of 1941/42. It fought in the Battle of Kursk in July 1943 as part of XLVI Panzer Corps, 9th Army. In June 1944 it faced the Russian summer offensive as part of 4th Armys XXXIX Panzer Corps and was virtually destroyed in the fighting. The Division was rebuilt in Germany and returned to combat in September 1944 as part of Army Group North. In early 1945 it was evacuated by sea to northern Germany and fought in the Battle of Berlin with Army Group Vistula where it was destroyed.

    A very brief history

    Cheers
    Ian
