136th Gebirgsjäger Regiment

Can anyone provide a unit history n the 136th Gebirgsjäger Regiment? I understand Regiment this was created after the Anschluss with Austria. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, Any idea who may have been the owner of this waffenrock? Or at least a list of Major's in the 136th Gebirgsjäger Regiment.

In a nutshell GJR 136, part of the 2 Geb.Div. was briefly involved in the invasion of Poland and from 1940 until dec '44\jan 45 was in North Norway and Finland\Russia on the Murmansk front. In January '45 it transferred back to the continent where it fought in Southern Germany.

As for a list of majors, i'll see what i can dig up when i get home but the list won't be complete.

Out of interest, around 2 kompanies worth of men from this regiment were jump trained in may\june 1940. A kompanie each jumped at the North Norwegian airfield of Bardufoss and the town of Tromsø a few days after the Norwegian capitulation in order to secure these two strategic points quickly. The men involved were awarded the para badge for it.

Going back to your original thread in the uniforms forum it seems reasonable to assume that we're looking at a WWI vet and that this is an early war jacket based on the lack of medal loops for war badges and the loops for a rather long medal bar.


Generalleutnant Walter Stettner Ritter von Grabenhofen
Kommandeur of I./GJR 136 as Major from 1.8.38, promoted oberstleutnant in oct of that year. His ribbon bar would be about the right size but he had the 1914 EKI and WWI WB amongst other things.

There was an Oberst Ryll who originally belonged to 136 and may have been a major at the time. no more info on him.
Same thing for Oberst Hauch, Kreitmeyer, Aschaber and Maile all were promoted Oberst in '43 or '44 so could have been Majors around '39\'40

Another possible is Obersleutnant Wolfmeyer, promoted Major 1.2.41

That's pretty much the best i can do at the moment i'm afraid.
