Actually, in some ways I believe some things are MUCH better. I greatly applaud, by example, the efforts of people like Tom Durante, Norm F, Andreas and others to improve our knowledge. Just can't find it in me, though, to always agree with everything (nor do I think they would really expect that), but I personally have learned a lot of very useful things from them and read carefully what they say. They are trying HARD to really help.

Some others, unfortunately, not so much....

This is still an ego (and money)-driven hobby and probably always will be. The degree of paranoia, and the willingness of some to exploit that, is still high, IMO. Can't do much about that.....

I once asked Detlev Niemann who the maker was and that was his answer.

Nope.

As Gentry said, alot has indeed changed in the last 20 years. The advent of the internet and discussion forums has allowed collectors to spread information more efficiently and effectively around the world and that has lead to an improved knowledge base. Its not that the collectors and dealers in the 80s and 90s intended to deceive, its just that they didn't have access to the immense sharing of information we have at our fingertips today. Add to that the good reference books that exist now as opposed to the black and white books that were being used in the 80s and this is a much safer hobby to be in if you take the time to do your homework.

It is mentioned that OM is a rare maker and a early badge. Seems like quite a few available right now. I just picked up a beauty from a reputable seller in Germany. I don’t have the Luftwaffe badges book but did buy the Kriegsmarine books and the DKiG book. What does the Luftwaffe badge book say about OM. I assume “unknown “ but was curious what other details might have been provided.
I just bought it to display with 2 Luftwaffe DKig in cloth that I have.

basically how much of his book does he want added to these threads ???

All I can say is that if you buy his books, you will not be disappointed. I paid a lot more than a collector in the USA would to get mine because of the postage to NZ. However, it well worth it for information such as the "J4" Juncker in zinc or the "J3" JMME with a wreath made by JMME.

Just two of the examples that I have benefited from this fantastic book

Everything known about all 3 variants is in the book regarding OM but it still unknown maker for now. I didnt mentionned Otto Meybauer as its a rumor and not even a possible connection. Volume 3 and 4 are in the making and later a possible volume 5 and any new discovery and perrtinent informations will be put in as its a big set. Also IMC magazine will provide any new discovery.

PS, I can only agree with Chris' comments on Seb's PB & PO book, it is excellent and well worth the money. In particular the Diamonds section is hands down the best information I have ever read on the subject.
