    Luftwaffe Honor Goblet

    Hi,

I'm looking for a while to acquire a nice goblet with photo/documentation of the man.

I recently have seen one with a dealer. It seems that the man was killed in action in September 42 in Russia, but the date on the goblet is a few weeks later, ie. October 1942. His Soldbuch does not mention the award, but has his KIA date.

I was wondering about the procedure at the time. If a man was applicable for the Honor Goblet, were these ordered to be made with a date to be engraved on it in the future. Then, at the time the award was handed out , the SOldbuch got the award mentioned ?

Just wondering how the date on the goblet can be post the date he was killed.

Are there any reference books on these awards ?

    Thanks for your help
    best wishes

    Hi JS1

The Honour Goblet could be awarded posthumously, as could the Deutsches Kreuz, Ritterkreuz, etc. Promotions were also given posthumously. I have the award document and Goblet to a man awarded posthumously, I have evidence in the papers of another man awarded the DK posthumously and there are plenty of documented RKs awarded in this way. Apart from honouring the fallen man, several awards (and promotion) brought pension or compensation benefits to widows and family so it was a way to help the berieved too.

    Best wishes

All we have, and it's pretty good, is a 1986 Die Traeger Des Ehrenpokals Fur Besondere Leistung im Luftkrieg. Has also the Heer, SS and KM honor spange holders.

A recommendation for an award is made and the process begins. Sometimes the recipient does not live to receive it. I have seen this with the Ehrenpoka; and the Knight's Cross. I have an Honor Goblet to a JG-52 pilot who was shot down the day the KC was to be presented. Another Pokal to a JG-77 pilot whose KC aeard was made about 6 weeks after his death in combat. I believe the date on the Goblet is the date it was produced and close to the date in the Honor List. Bob

Yes it's a very good reference book but the problem is not all bearers are listen. Specially the early ones who had the 838 silver goblets.

As Brian says, the best we have as a reference but be aware that many of the early awards are not listed. I have documents and Goblets to some guys who are not listed.

This is a good example that Bob is talking about. Erich Seela was killed in Russia on 7.09.1942. and the Goblet Honor bears the date 18.10.1942

The date in the book is taken from the Ehrenliste der Luftwaffe and not from the actual Goblet. The difference in dates can be up to three weeks.

                              Regards, Thomas
