Badge and case share similar characteristics to my set.

I also noticed the Deumer bird is 'equipped' with a pupil.
Congrats NS! A superb cased J1 Observer specimen I guess the Easter bunny showed up early for you this year

Yep I noticed that too: the pupil on this bird is special. Its like a "thread wear indicator" on tires... Because of its exposed position the size of the pupil (I call it the "snake eye") varies from a full lenght slit to partial slit to a dot and is non existant on some examples depending on wear

Similar case but different leatherette texture & typefont on my example

          Best regards

Great comparison about the tyres Jean-Claude
I have searched several other examples and sometimes there is no pupil.
Depends on wear and sometimes the resolution of the pictures is just too low to spot it.

It is true Deumer used several types of cases for there early observer. Beside the first pattern case Deumer also used the reduced size case identical to the ones Juncker used for the J1. From my own observations i have seen many Deumer badges in the reduced sized case only with the designation 'beobachter' while Juncker had the same case with the designation 'beobachterabz.' Don't know what is worth but i have seen this many times before. Looks to me they had some issues with the first supplier and searched a temporary solution. Later you can find thin wreath D1 observers in the typical black, second pattern case, which they used for the D2 badges and is very unique to Deumer. These cases have a much higher inlay compared to the later cases with D2 badges inside.
Recently i was able to buy a Deumer pilot case with a non matching FLL badge inside.
I sold the badge and kept the case. Before i got it, i thought it was a typical case for a D2 badge but when i received it i noticed a thick wreath badge could not fit inside because of the high inlay. So i believe this is also a transitional case only suitable for the Deumer D1 pilot.

                Hello again NS

My early Obs case is probably what you describe as the "Juncker style" but mine is the same size as my early Deumer pilot case (not smaller). I've seen a number of these over the years on dealer sites & in threads that I've collected in my archives: Tim O. also posted the same case a while back with his D1 Observer. Stands to reason that variants exist since they were out- sourced to specialized suppliers!

Great early Deumer Pilot case by the way. Hope you find a worthy occupant for it soon! Your Pilot case is the same as mine for texture and typefont (size & style) and also appear to have the 2 to 1 lid to bottom ratio like mine which explains why your D2 Pilot doesnt fit: the latter uses a 1 to 1 lid to bottom ratio. The only minor differences I can see from your picts is that your Pilot case has the very dark blue leatherette covering instead of black like mine and the lid insert colour appears to be the same dark blue colour satin as the bottom velvet on yours instead of a purple/violet (?) like mine. I attached a few picts of my cases; not too hot old pictures but the best ones I have for now

                Take care
