Yup that badge has "similar or near exact characteristics" to the one shown.

But the photo to badge comparison cannot be made for exact match to die.

      What makes this "original" please?

          Ummm, no.

I am talking about THIS badge being authentic, period, etc.

I can show you a hundred fake pilot badges that "have similar characteristics" based on period photos.

Does that make them "original". Rhetorical. No it does not.

Just have a question about the finish of the eagle, looks like " greasy" paint more than the thin layer we see normally.
I've not studied these big gliders, but I think that better fakes are out..
Not too any to compare with and to compare with what ?
I've seen several at dealers left and right, dealers I don't trust, so what are they selling ?
Should I trust pitting on these ?
            Do originals have cracks ?
The finish, how does it look on a original.
            How many makers ?
            The rivet thing..
            etc.

            Just my stupid questions ..

Just wondering why these were so heavy, while glider planes are very light..
Maybe you just could throw the badge out of the window to win some height ?

            Jos.

I see what Brian is referring to and with certain “rare” badges, the situation is all too common. Not enough records, examples, trustworthy provenance, data, studies etc to make a conclusion, spot a trend, make a link and therefore judge if a piece is even real.

As I said earlier, in these cases you have to work with what you have and form an opinion. The dozen or so nice looking examples are either all fakes; or all real. This can be said for a good deal of pieces.

For general records, here is the grouping from the link if its no longer valid.

                  1. No one is disputing that these appear in period photos.
                  2. I am not convinced WHICH of these big wings is an "original" to any of the photos you all have posted.
                  3. I am aware of the "need to collect everything" and if a general "consensus" forms it will necessitate the "need" to fill a "hole".
                  4. The urge to believe in some collectors clouds the proof to "original".
                  5. Publishing any one of these so far from the "evidence" provided in my opinion is a gross disservice to members.

Wingtip to wingtip these are the same size. Badge in photo is probably not a perfectly flat straight on photo. But, eagle to me appears more delicate in the photo example than the fat bird of the badge in the thread.

But I have NO doubt some of you will see "an exact match".

Head of photo bird does not extend to wreath.
                    Wreath appears more round.
                    Wings appear more narrow.

The only thing I can tell you is that this was a direct vet buy off one of my local newspaper ads with a bunch of other German stuff (helmet, insignia, etc) . A number have people have asked about buying this , I gave it Grenadier Auctions , it's in the current sale , lot 194. I don't collect Luftwaffe badges .
