Hi Tim
It seems to me that this early type is so. Here, for comparison, my badge with the same feature, with eagle which curves nicely over the wreath.

I dont know how prevalent that is but some of these early ROAGs also have 2 "flat spots" (for lack of a better term) grooved into the wreath where the wings rest which actually make them thinner. Given the rather narrow points of contact between the wreath and the wings on a ROAG (when compared to the Pilot, Observer or Para) I suspect that partially embedding the eagle in the wreath was a precaution to prevent the eagle from wobbling or coming loose
Hello Guys , i have a couple of things i can not get my head round about the J1/CEJ ROAG badge and i have tagged it on here because there are examples in this thread that show what i mean and i am looking for one as well and i obviously want to be correct when i buy one,are their distinct differences like there are between the pilot badge J1s due to them being hand finished ?, okay in this thread we have Tims J1 without a cutout between the lightening bolts and the third feather on the left wing as you look at it is level with the edge of the reef, also Tims CEJ has no cut out at the lightening bolts next to the claw and the third feather appears to protrude past the reef, now Jacek shows his CEJ with the cutout at the lightening bolts and the third feather goes past the reef,in the illustration that Jacek very kindly posted shows the J1/CEJ with the cutout and the third feather level with the reef, now in our own Data base the J1 nickel silver/tom is with cutout and the CEJ sil/tom is without cutout,so are some J1s the same as CEJ and is the cutout difference just a time frame 1936/1937 ,i am not out to ruffle any feathers ,thanks Kevin.
Yes, all of the Juncker J1, J2, J3, etc were hand finished so almost no two are alike! In a ROAG you'll see different amounts of hand filing around the bolts, cutout vs no cutout on a pilot, etc for some examples.
Personally, the better the hand finishing, the more I like them.
