    Pilots Badge. Opinions please.

    Hi All,
    Would like your opinions on this unmarked Pilots Badge I am considering buying for 410 Euros.
    Does anyone have any idea on the maker? Is this early or late? Found one with similar hinge. but they said it was the unknown maker.
    Any information appreciated.

        Hi Mike,

        Can't see anything wrong with it, textbook down to the shaky hinge. It indeed is the unknown maker and it looks like a buntmetall eagle on a buntmetall wreath but I'm not completely sure about the wreath. €410 for sure isn't a steal for this type of Pilot badge but it's not excessive either.

            Hi Mike,

            I agree with Philippe, its the unknown maker.

            Giel, we don't know who the "unknown" maker is, hence the name. We do know he made most types of luftwaffe badges and that he made them for several years, since they can be found in tombak and zink.

            Philippe, I would say the wreath is tombak as this is an earlier style of the "unknown" maker, with the wing cut outs more hand finished than the later zink straight saw cuts. Also looking at the hardware and how its attached, I would lean towards tombak.

              Hi Mike,

              I agree that this appears to be a genuine example from the "unknown maker".

              This example actually appears to have relatively well formed rivets!

              The only thing I disagree with is that the wreath is probably not tombak but instead nickel-silver (as is probably the eagle as well). No yellow basemetal on, for example, the really worn wreath-tie. The early POs from this maker did have tombak wreaths though.

              Re pricing, imo these are undervalued. It's an early (clarification - earlyish war-time, not pre-war imo), good quality Pilot's Badge with obverse detailing (and in the case of unworn badges - finish) on par with GWLs - simple as that. If you want to pay almost double for a badge with a well known maker mark, that's your choice.

                    Same Unknown Maker?

                    Hi All -

                    Can you tell me if this late war unmarked Pilot's Badge is by the same unknown maker as the earlier badge shown? The eagle looks identical, but that's where the similarities end. Mine is made completely of zinc with steel pin, hinge and catch.

                        Hi All,

                        Thanks guys for the information. I have decided to purchase the badge.
                        The eagle has a coppery patina to it, the wreath looks as though it is a different metal which I think is nickel silver and has a dark greenish patina to it. Could it possibly be a tombak eagle and a nickel silver wreath. Weighs 50 gr.
                        There is what appears to be the start of two hairline cracks from the outside edge of the wreath, is this common?
                        Be glad of any other comments.

                            @GLM: yes, it is the very same maker, you have a hinge variety, not uncommon on the zinkers.

                            @mike.c.: Yes, hairline cracks in the wreath due to production are common for these badges.
