I have a question how much does polishing hurt the value on a Honor goblet?. ...I'm considering buying one..and only one for my collection.

Personally I would avoid polishing an Alpaca goblet. I have seen terrible results, some have probably used this to "make it shine like the door of a whorehou$e", Jack Beauregard, My Name is Nobody.

You'll have to check carefully if there are scratches on it which are obviously due to a hard polishing. If the polishing has been gently done it shouldn't lower the value as after a certain time it won't stay as shiny as after a fresh or new polishing.
IMO if you plan to have just one for your collection you should buy a silver 835 instead of an Alpaca. As you said if an Ehrenpokal has been too much polished but awarded to a KC holder for instance it matters less.
But be careful with the honor goblets: you think you'll buy just one but Bob ("Honor goblet master" on WAF ) also started with one... and nobody knows now when he'll stop buying them.
Looking forward to see the beauty you are going to add in your collection. Good hunting.

i'm pretty sure my finances will rule out too much of addiction to these
I would prefer a 835 to a KC winner, but I doubt that will be in my cash reserves...so i think it will be a real nice 835 to a average guy (not that any Pokal winner is average) or polished Alpaka to a KC winner...I'm in no hurry so when the right one comes along !Last edited by ww2gunguy; 07-24-2017, 02:41 PM.

On this subject yet a little history:
20 years ago, I visited a Knight's cross winner of the Kampfflieger living in my hometown. I was allowed to look at his awards. After I wanted to see his honor goblet, he asked his wife to fetch the piece out of the cupboard . Obviously, the Ehrenpokal was some time unnoticed behind different flower vases. As his wife appeared pinched the patinated goblet in hand on the terracce my host looked visibly upset ."Giesela, what should my guest think of us , morning you must first of all time thoroughly clean the Goblet."
Best regards
Waterloo
Sorry I translate with google

If it is a silver 835 version and polished in the right way, it should not do much damage. There you get the discussion if it should look like the day it was awarded or have a blackish patina. Personal choice I would say.
With Alpaka it is much easier to do irreversible damage to the top layer. So buying a Alpaka goblet that is polished could indeed lower the value.
If you already know you will just buy one, make sure it is the right one and take your time. Look into the recipient and the unit. There are enough goblet out there and prices can be really fair or just over the top.
Silver versus Alpaka, the state the goblet is in and the name of the recipient will all reflect in the price.
Good luck with getting your goblet!
