Hi, folks,
I have a question, please. My landlord in Germany in 1980 served in the Luftwaffe, as a radio operator working with radar to guide the Nightfighters toward bombers.
I did not get clarification as to whether he did anything to operate the radar, or if he was only a radio operator relaying instructions to the Nightfighters. I do know that he was chosen for this specialty because he had a clear speaking voice.
He was a great guy, and the kind of person anyone would want to have for a grandfather. I've been thinking of him more in recent years, because I feel sure he has probably passed away. He was a bit older during the war, having a wife and 3 children.
What type specialty badge would he have worn? Was there one especially for radar?
I do know he was a voice operator. If that were his primary job, would he have worn a Signals patch (lightning bolt)?
Any information you can give would be very helpful. As I've not studied Luftwaffe uniforms before, please be specific if you mention a badge he would have worn -- e.g., background color of the patch, color of the insignia, etc.
He gave me his Schuetzenschnurr (very neatly de-Nazi-fied) after getting to know me. He said he had only granddaughters, he could not display it in Germany, and he knew I would appreciate it more than anyone else. He was right!
I am planning to put together a framed display with his Schuetzenschnurr, a Luftwaffe eagle, and a description of his name, hometown, and career in the military. As I get older, it's increasingly important to me to keep his memory alive. I don't want it to just become some random "piece of militaria" from an unknown soldier. If there is a proper qualification badge, I would like to include it in the display.
One last question, please? What color would his collar tabs have been?
Thank you very much in advance for your help!
Sincerely,
John
