Hi Nicola, the badge is an original type 1. Interesting the finish of the clouds, never seen a variation like this.

all that has happened with this badge, is the German soldier has removed the paint from the clouds, lighting bolt and ground. When this is done, it has exposed the shiny silver plating underneath like a WH infantry assault badge which is quite effective.

Hi Chris, I don't think the paint was removed, I tend to believe this badge was finished in this way.
From my phone the Nicola's badge looked different, now I see the finish is all silver, hand painted on it. You clearly see it on the clouds.

The AWS badges were finished in several different combinations, and in this case IMO were never added a paint over the silver finish.
Sometimes the paint were put directly on the base metal, some others not.

The second badge you posted never had a paint on it, is like the badge posted from Nicola.

I see what you mean. I thought I could see a few specks of grey paint remaining and just assumed that on my one, the German soldier had simply cleaned the paint off and it was perhaps a one-off alteration by that soldier.

However, now that I see Nicola's example, I agree they do seem to be the same type of less known colour variation/ combination from this maker. The silver on the clouds, lighting bolt and ground does indeed seem to be a different tone/ brightness from what is on the wreath.

This is an excellent discovery because it is another variation of these to chalk up in the mix,

To me it looks to have been painted with gold paint (finger prints on back...)
