Can you help identify this Luftwaffe Pilots badge?

I have a Luftwaffe Pilot's Badge, or at least I think I do. Hopefully you can follow this link and see some pictures http://tiny.cc/ps1vyx

Can anyone tell me if they think this is genuine and do you know who the maker is? I have been unable to find this on the internet. On the back of the badge are the letters H G E. The G sits inside a triangle. All the measurements seem to be consistent with the real thing. Any help with identification would be appreciated.

No ID help needed here - the badge and marking are both bad, neither conforming to known badges from the period.

            Hi Sperrin,

I can only agree with the others, a very common fake.

I'm uploading the pics to the forum so they don't get lost for future use. Welcome to the WAF forum, best place on the net if you are interested in Third Reich awards and badges.

How can you tell if a badge is a fake? The reason why I ask this is because this badge came with medals and belt buckle which I know are the real thing. It just seems strange the someone would collect a fake but I am not doubting your word. Have you seen this badge before? What gives it away because the dimensions are correct, it does not bend and it is 3d and not flat.

When you compare to known originals, the wreath, eagle, catch, marker mark, hinge & material do not match known originals. Also, with your type fake they can be found with different marker marks, etc.

So everything about it screams fake. Sorry.

It is a tough lesson but there is a lot more help available now than was the case when many here started collecting. Check the database of originals here on WAF, check the threads and learn the originals. There are currently no books or articles that cover all variants so you need multiple references and the support of the collecting community to learn. Always buy with a return option and ideally post before purchase until you build your knowledge. Most of us learnt the hard way but there is a great resource here to help you so please use it.

I hope you can return the offending badge. As Greg says, there is nothing correct about it for a period piece.

                          Hi Sperrin,

Your fake got its start from the 1957 version Pilot Badges. As you can see, yours is a copy of this eagle design and the swastika was added to it, combined with a common copy of the Assmann Pilot badge WREATH. It carries a fraudulent HGE maker mark, which was never used on wartime originals, so that is another red flag. On top of that, this type of fake can be found with other fraudulent maker marks as well, putting the final nail in its coffin. Here is the same fake, marked for Assmann.
