    Luft GAB's.... Why so ugly??

How come 99.9% of these badges I see have no finish and are just pretty much a grey-looking piece of crap? Why does it seem like the majority are this way and other TR badges have more examples with good finish?

Just curious. And if anyone has a GAB that doesn't look like crap them by all means please show it!

Well because they are (almost) all made of zinc.
Zinc is lower quality and doesn't hold the finish well.
That's why they look dull grey.
If i were you, i would search for a nice conditioned Osang or Karneth.
They tend to hold their finish better than other makers. Or a Juncker in neusilber...
but that's nearly impossible to find.

Many IABs are made of zinc, yet still look good?

I have seen very few Luft GAB's in comparable condition. Is this because the award is more scarce?

I'm not with you on this statement. I have seen many nice erdkampf badges in zinc. Ask Seb, he can show you a nice one

I think alot of collectors will disagree with you Brian, as there are plenty of LGABs with plenty of nice silver finish. Zinc was introduced fairly early in the war by badge makers (1941 by most accounts), and therefore still quite a bit of quality control. Zinc is a perfect material to make badges from and as long as it is good quality zinc, there should be no problem with them holding their finishes even 70+ years after they were produced. Just look at the AGMuK CCCs as but one good example of this.

Here are a few of my LGABs, not 100% mint but with majority of finish remaining. The only LGABs I know of that have consistently pretty poor finishes are the Arno Wallpach's, but these are considered the last of the last produced during the war. And even these can be found with decent finish remaining from time to time.

            Hello Brian,

There is plenty of LWGAB in excellent condition. Here's mine Brehmer. Near mint with polished edges. IMO the AWS are mostly find in bad condition but osang, muk5 and juncker as example are oftenly find in super nice condition.
