glider pilot license

I would appreciate some information on the attached image of a glider pilot license. Reading Stijn David's book, only luftwaffe licenses were issued but this is not luftwaffe license. The photo suggests the pilot is a luftwaffe pilot, so why is the license not luftwaffe? regards graeme

Its a civil glider pilots license.....all pilots first trained on gliders for familiarization, if they passed that then they went onto motorised aircraft.

It could also be the person just trained as a glider pilot anyway which was not uncommon.

There is no connection between this and the military license (red) however. With that said, the green military license is if I remember correctly simply a military version of the one you show. However the green license did not entitle the person to fly military gliders....only on qualification of the red on....if that makes sense!

Ian did translate it in the correct way! It is not uncommon to find these grey ones with the person in Uniform. These are the civil ones and could for example have been obtained when still a civilian. If you then got drafted and you had to renew your licence it could very wel be that your licence then got a picture with that person in uniform.

These licences are limited in time, as such one had to renew it regulary.

let's not forget that the only way to obtain even a glider pilot's license

and 'enjoy' the relevant training

had been as a member of the 'Flieger HJ' , that no doubt

resulted in a picture taken in HJ uniform !

Guys,

let me add ....

even in our days it takes quite some time - in between finishing your

"civil" flight training and being invited for the 'license check flight/exam' ...

So, it might well have happened that this individual had joined the air force

while waiting for the exam !
