I never noticed this before ! Look along my barrel to the breach on the reverse it's almost semi 'scooped' out. I can't depict this on any of the others above ?

Perhaps this is the reason for the maker mark placement ?

Bugger, I'll have to get my medals out now.

      Dear Marcus,

I don´t think that poses a problem. But let´s have a better look at it if you make new pictures anyway.
      Cheers, Frank

        Hi Frank,

No cause for deliberation or concern in any way shape or form in regards to the 'scoop', the picture of the picture I took gave the impression of this.

It's flat backed so to speak, no ridge or scoop at all when held in the hand, it's just a die flaw or something ?

The eagle looks funny though, half of it's head is missing, damage or casting I'd suspect a casting error of sorts perhaps.

        Kind regards,

        Marcus

                    Dear Marcus,

These creases can be found on award´s reverses from time to time. I think it has to do with the metal cooling off leaving the crease, typically in narrow areas like on yours where the metal would cool earlier than for the rest of the badge.
The misshapen head should be a production fault.
                    Cheers, Frank

P.S.: looking at Tom´s middle badge, I think I can see a very slight crease in the same position as well.
                      Cheers, Frank

You've eyes like a Hawk Frank ! (Not bad for your age ) Yes I can see a very feint line up from the marker mark on Tom's. The eagles head is of course intact though.

A silly question Frank, but the maker mark, was this stamped on after the badge was made or was it in the process on the likes of the incuse maker marks ???

Is it possible because of the cooling stress crack that they would stamp the odd one in a different place ??

I know it's a theorectical answer you can only give really, and your guess is as good as mine........but do you have any further thoughts or ideas on this any reasoning in this that may have been discussed before ?

                          Dear Marcus,

The Wernstein mark is definitely a stamp and was added after the badge was produced. It is not part of the die. So that makes a different position perfectly ok.
                          Cheers, Frank

Thanks Lorenzo! As you mentioned, the wide pin can be found on the Infantry Assault Badge, and as Chet mentioned, the Panzer Assault Badge. It can also be found on the General Assault Badge as I have one of those in my collection.
                            Best regards! Tom
