Great photo. Likely a former airman transferred to one of the Field Divisions. An increasing reality given the Luftwaffe's increasing losses during the war and Germany's need for ground fighting personnel.

My thoughts exactly. As shortages of fuel and replacement aircraft left the Kampfgeschwader effectively over-manned, more and more units were disbanded and their personnel sent to ground-based units. A sad waste of highly trained men.

The only odd thing here is that this guy has qualified as an observer, fought in ground actions, survived the winter of 1941-42 (from the Ostmedaille ribbon) and made it through to 1945 without even getting the Iron Cross 2nd Class. This seems a bit of an anomaly and it would be interesting to know his story.

        Perhaps an underachiever?
Is that an award loop over the LGAB?

Sometimes the whole crew got a badge, while only one 1 or 2 did the work, that's when you work as a team... in that case, no EK for everyone though.
Flak is a good example, everyone who jumped around the 88 at the moment that the planes were hit got the badge..
In other cases awards didn't make it to the front and you had bad luck..
Who knows, who can tell ?
It's Always guessing when it comes to pics only..
          Nice pic btw ..!

          Jos.

Gentlemen, thanks for all the interesting comments!

As requested by fdodge here a closer look but it seems to me due to the high contrast that there was some dirt on the negative rather than an empty loop.

Unfortunately I don´t have any more Infos than the writing "Norway, 45" on the back of the photo.

            Cheers,

            Jack
