Yesterday I found this Jucnker Pilot in it's case.

      Hi Jim

It is a J3. Here are two J2s (one assembled by Deumer, one by Juncker). The easiest clue I use is the feet of the eagle. The J3 eagle has rather ugly, thick feet in my opinion while the J2 eagle has 'pretty feet'.

          Thanks!

Tim, the feet are a perfect way to recognize them in the future.

Hi Jim, as others have said a very nice J3 Pilot, In addition to the "big feet" mentioned by Tim there are 2 other key differences between J2 and J3. The feathering in the left wing is different and the wreath is different & bulkier on a J3.

What catches my attention most on your very nice specimen though is the case. Usually (even on J1 cases) there is a cut out to accept the pin and one would certainly expect that on a J3 (late) case but your case in "enchased" (I'm french, not sure if its a proper word in English but I mean you case is only indented for the pin not cut through) which, coupled to the velvet lining is a feature one would expect to see on an early case (e.g. Deumer early black case are made that way) so it would be interesting to see the front

                        Best regards

                        JC

                          Thanks All.

Hello Jean-Claude, of course you can see the case, pictures attached.
The badge was found with this case together and came from the relatives of the pilot a few weeks ago, the badge was allways in this case and can only be put in one way. You can see the imprint of the badge on the velvet.

                          Regards Jim

Thanks for the additional picture Jim

Similar inside (satin lid, velvet badge compartment) to my early Deumer case but the outide material and lid designation are different. I'm not knowledgeable enough to say which maker(s) used similar cases but I'm sure some WAF members know. IMO though the case construction/detail would lead me to beleive its older than the badge it contains even if it has been with the badge for a very long time.

Nothing wrong with that as it happes regularly enough (I have a similar situation in my collection involving an Observer badge) but all I wanted to point out is that your case is probably as remarquable as the badge it contains!

                            Take care!

                            JC
