    Just fyi

The auction house description of this badge reads as follows:

Original Cased WWII German Luftwaffe pilot's badge. Two rivets. Overall very good condition, with some discoloration to wreath. Weighs 42.6 grams.

They must have an expert reviewing these items if they know the correct weight of the badge? Wouldnt you think? I dunno.....like I said guys Im fairly new to this and its an expensive way to learn, and if thats what really comes out of this then I will take it.

      Updated photos

      Everyone,

I took some close up photos of just the Pilots Badge. I hope the photos are better then the other ones and you can see it clearer. At least I tried to do that. Please let me know your thoughts after reviewing these new photos.

      Thank you!!

      Matthew

My Opa's photo wearing his LW Pilots Badge

Well the link below has a photo of him in full uniform on leave in France and you can see his Pilots Badge but dont have any way to take that photo and zoom it up to view the badge up close. I am hoping one of you have that capability. The photo is old of course and has been copied many times so I appologize for the poor quality but this is the only photo where you can see his badge.

        Thank you everyone!

          Hi Matthew

Your picts do confirm it is not a badge I would want for my collection. As mentioned before, it looks like an FLL eagle copy (originals FLL pilots are all unmarked) but the details are a different from an original (like the one Tiger posted) The wreath looks like a J2 casting to me but this is just my opinion. Anyway I'm not the most computer litterate guy around but I was able to find 5 or 6 threads in WAF archives referring to the exact same badge either unmarked, with different maker marks and its consistenly referred to as a repro/fake. There are others where this eagle is used with other wreaths and it was also considered a fake just check it out...

I think most of us just consider ourselves as "maniacal enthousiasts" so any opinions shared here are not likely to sway the seller if he had no intention of taking the badge back in the first place. Thats why its ALWAYS better to ask for opinions BEFORE you buy if you are not sure. But you'll never know if you dont ask for a refund and surely you should have enough ammunition in these archived threads to build a case to convince the seller that he made an "honest mistake" in claiming this badge to be original if there was ever a return privilege to begin with or it hasnt already expired.

As far as your grand father's picture is concerned (a very nice picture by the way!) but I cant even take a guess at what kind of pilot badge he is wearing from that picture. The eagle does appear to have a very long and slim wings so to me it could be anything except maybe a FLL or a GWL which have the stubbiest eagles.

Good luck and keep us posted

          JC

            Thanks guys!!!

Thank you Jean-Claude, Thomas, the rest of you! I have learned an expensive lesson here. I was mistaken to think that a respectable auction house with 100% guarantees and experts looking at the materials coming in to certify them, was a safe place to bid and try and win items like this Pilots Badge. I now know that this isnt the case. You are never safe. I will always from now on check with you guys before I make a purchase like this.

On the positive side of things. You guys have saved me from keeping this badge in my collection and admiring it and being satisfied that I finally got the badge I always wanted. I could have had this thing for 20 years and it always would have been a fake. So thats the positive!!

If I had a credit card, I would buy my membership for this site in a second!!! Its well worth it.

            Again, thank you!!!

No problem Matthew, I gather you didnt have return privileges ? Too bad but not so unusual for auction houses. Unless they are specialized, they may be liquidating assets ranging anywhere from old baseball card collections and Tiffany lamps to Heppelwhite furniture (with the odd TR badge here & there) so you have to know your stuff

Stick to reputable dealers (some are sponsors here) and the WAF estand to get good TR regalia and dont take chances if you are not sure: there is a lot of experience/knowledge on this forum for you to draw on.

              Take care

                UPDATE and THANK YOU!!

To Everyone that posted on this link.

The Auction House had agreed to return the Pilots Badge and Case and Refund my money ( in so small way because of the verifications everyone made and the concensus here being so strong )

They have fully agreed to this and will fully refund my money!!

I thank ALL of you, especially Jean-Claude, and Thomas for helping me and the rest of you building a strong concensus for me to show the auction house how firm in belief we are that, unfortunately, the badge and case were fake.

As a result and as my way of ensuring this will never happen to me again, I have become an Associate Member Today!!! YEAH!!!

                Again, thank you all!!

                      Great new Matthew!

It was worth giving it a try after all wasnt it? As Greg said stick to the eStand (or to reputable dealers) and get the next one vetted here before you buy. As for trying to match it to your grand father's original badge its impossible just based on the picture you showed but if he still has the original Pilot license certificate or can tell you the date of award it will help you pin it down to a type of Pilot badge that would be credible to replace his award since designs/variants, materials etc changed as the war progressed.

Again, happy it worked out for you

                      Regards

                      JC

Jean-Claude, Thomas, Gregory, Rik, and everyone else

Thanks guys! Without you, I couldnt have done it. I'm really happy I can come here and get my things screened before I buy. I am going to try and do all of my shopping on the e-stand from now on.

                        Thanks!!

                        Matthew
