I would guess that the sprayed felt paper from the lid is missing and somebody has replaced the blue sprayed felt base with some kind of beige/white flocking. Its also a very late case, one of the last IMO.

I wonder if the interior has faded from its blue color to be pure white now. We see that on other cases, here are two examples I had on file showing the fading we sometimes see. Depending on how much light it is exposed to and the quality of the dye, it could be possible that all traces of the original blue dye is gone IMO. Especially with such a late-war case like this one. What makes me think that its faded is that the cloth part that covers the hinge area is also white, and this is not something that would be easy to replace.
Tony, is it possible to pull the base insert out and check the underside of it? If it is original, but just faded then the bottom of the insert should still be blue where it was hidden from the light.
Hi Tom,
Thanks for your reply. I took the insert out and it does not look good. It was all white material and the way it was put together looks real fishy to me. It took some doing to get it apart it was glued in place.
