sometimes the rivets on these gabs by rk and the m and k marked pieces have this effect or this partial effect and are at various stages indicative of rot to the metal content of the rivets themselves

Hi Brig, petroleum jelly aka vaseline has been used with success to remove any present zinc pest and then a light layer left on to retard future corrosion...conservators seem to use wax-based products to preserve finishes on old metal/firearms, I think the best thing to do is when you handle your badges is to wipe them down after so you get any oils or other contaminents off and store them in a dry environment not subject to fluctuations in temperature. I have a buddy who has his stuff in his room and he does not have any a/c so the temp goes from hot to cold to humid to dry, and also subject to wind as he is high up, and his dagger scabbards, gorgets etc have developed a light rust film on the surface,

              John

It appears to tally with the example in Sascha Weber's reference, pp 40-41.

I'd be quite happy to own it.
