Judging from the lack of wear, I guess he was using the cloth version and only wearing the badge while at base.

Rich, congrats Bud! It's certainly rewarding to discover things like this. I assume the case came with the badge and is actually its original case? Probably was sent home in this case after he was KIFA.

Strange to think that he survived all that combat only to be killed by ice accumulation on the airframe. Modern aircraft have de-icing or anti-icing on all the leading edges, props, engine inlets.....but even then, once in a while mother nature comes up with something even modern aircraft can't handle.

Now....do you think you are lucky enough to come up with a picture of Feldwebel Huonker?

            Hi Richard,
What is there to say. It is a lovely badge and a great piece of history to go with it.

            Regards,

              Guys,

many thanks for the interest and comments. It certainly has been incredible to finally know a little more about Huonker. I'm certainly going to continue researching and with some luck I may eventually find a photo.

The case did not come with the badge however. I have married them together as the case only accommodates an early slim type badge and I thought it fitting for the badge.

              Regards
              Rich

                  Hi there

Congrats Rich for identifying the owner of your badge . The badge with personality is something more , a true piece of history. I have a similar one - however the name scratched may be not sufficient to do the same .

                  regards

                    Midas,

Can you post the front to see the condition? I think without knowing the geschwader it would be very difficult.

                    Looks really nice though,
                    Rich
