    Pilot What? Badge

Here's one from my buddy who owns that Assmann Alu./BM badge posted yesterday.

I told him this one was probably so controversial or just plain fake that it should probably be in a separate drawer completely.

He showed me a photo in Fuehrer and Fatherland of one similar but not identical where the author describes it as a prototype.

I don't like the word prototype when you're trying to sell me a badge, but hey, a little Tuesday controversy can't be all bad.

The back, I'm not going to bother with more photos unless asked. Even the prototype in the F and F book had rivets...

I have never seen anything like it... It looks new...the rainbow sheen near the catch?

          Glider piltos badge

          hello,

That is a interesting badge (im not saying it is good or bad !!!! )

Angolia mention this badge as a protoype => that is certainly not true as there does exist enough period photo proof that such large eagle badge did exist and where more widely spread then tought (altough the word widely is not in his place here as every original Glider pilots badge is to be considered very rareĆ !!!!!!!!!

I would not be that quick to condamn these (talking in general !!!) large eagle glider pilot badges as " just plain fake that it should probably be in a separate drawer completely."

          Cordial greetings

            Large eagle glider badges

            Hello,

Here is a interesting link for the persons who do not believe in the period existance of these large eagle glider badges :

            http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...=glider+badges

And here is one that was purchased a few months ago with the estate of a Glider pilot ( from the original wearer !!! )

            Cordial greetings,

My friend has had this in his collection for several years. I was impressed by the detail but I had doubts it was real, now with Stijn's imput I'm conflicted...

A LOT of details on this badge don't match very good or repos but are closer to the real deal.

From this photo you can clearly see the wreath is die piece, by the little crevaces in the outer areas.

Here's the catch and my final photo and Frank H's headache of the day

I was also skeptical as he was offering the piece to me at a very very, yes redundant, very high price... I don't like the word prototype but if a glider badge then

                    Dear Stijn,

I think the most important contribution from you would be a reverse shot of your badge.

Not a headache, Brian, it is interesting. But my opinion is that it will always remain a "maybe" badge. I am not talking about the big eagle glider in general, but especially about your friendĀ“s badge.
                    Cheers, Frank

Agreed Frank! Thanks. I have enough questionable items in my own collection that I don't need this headache

But it's interesting and you never, never know what proof will surface.

                        Large eagle badge

                        Hello,

Frank => To see the actual reverse would not help you that much as there does exist both original badges with and without rivetted eagle IMHO !!!!!!!!!!! ( in a older thread i have made it clear that the badges reverse etc ... some other details will not be shown as a matter not to help fakers out, feel free to ask whatever is needed but do not ask to give all the characteristics as that way these badges are condamned to have real soon a exact twin fake brother !!!! )

Brian => Could you advise us from what material the badge is made off ? + could you show us a close up from the right wing ?

I believe as soon as Detlev's new price catalogue will be out there is another such a original badge covered.

                        Cordial greetings,

I won't see it again for several months. I'm guessing it's Tombak.

                            Large eagle badge

                            Hello,

I can say you that the original badges are made out of Tombac !!! => so in that aspect the badge seems to be correct iff the material is indeed tombac.

The pin on itself has the correct pointy look but it seems to be repaired ?, is this correct? Please advise me also on the diameter of the pin (milimeter wise !!!) + ask for a few better shots on the right wing + from the eagle's head.

                            Cordial greetings,

One can not say the badge is original without seeing it, but these were not proto typs but another type that was used. A photo of it in wear, as well as the badge can be seen on page 205 Combat Medals of the Third Reich. The badge came with the Jump liecence from which the photo was copied. The group belonged to Alfred Ruli.
