    Poof?

I swear I posted an answer this morning about dies and soft strikes, etc... regarding a pilot's badge being discussed.

Now I can't seem to find that thread to see any further developments.

Was the thread pulled because of a healthy dose of paprika?

    Thanks.

    Tony

Are you sure you posted it in a militaria forum ?

I remember it - a GWL thread. Some Hungarian guy asked about a good FLL. I recall Tiger gave a very good explanation on dies. I also said something quite stunning, but it is lost in the ether...

I noticed the missing thread also. Tom told the guys to keep the discussion in English, otherwise he would put an end to the thread. I don't think the guys wanted to listen.

                      Hi guys,

Tony, I did delete the entire thread as the guy just kept on typing long posts all in gibberish. His pics were also posted via an offsite hosting site which is a pet peeve of mine because the pics can be removed sometime in the future and the thread becomes useless. I pulled the thread and advised "kraut" to upload his pics directly to the forum and we would be happy to discuss the badge. Sorry for the inconvenience, and I hope you guys will agree with me that threads like that are worthless without decent pics to discuss about.

Tony, here is your post and it is very good information that I agree 100% with by the way:

                      Gentlemen!

Behave yourselves and consider the following.........

A die doesn't have to be worn or defective to produce a poor result. Just as often it is the process of using the dies and materials to be struck not according to specs.

We often forget that proper operation of the die striking process has a lot to do with the quality of the finished product. Variances in stamping or striking pressure as well as the hardness of the planchet used to strike the badge will determine how well the material fills the die. Proper anealling of the planchet combined with a strong strike pressure usually produces a top quality strike.

Conversely, an improperly anealled planchet that is too hard and a lesser striking pressure will often not fill the die completely, resulting in a less than perfect strike. An incomplete strike where the planchet material did not properly flow into every crevice of the die is often called a soft strike.

The eagle's head being the deepest part of the die did not get completely filled on this example.

                      Hope this helps.

                      Tony""

                          Thanks Tom,

For a moment I thought that Jos might be right and that I may have posted my answer on a Hungarian dating service network instead of a militaria site.

I'm glad that issue has been resolved.

Now, if I can only get someone named Natashia to quit emailing me about wanting to be spanked...........................

                          All the best,

Or to get 1,000,000 Lira from a South African bank, or for cheap Viagra pills, or to get a diploma on line!!!

p.s., Zack nailed my smell, its mainly sulfuric with a tinge of musty militaria, a wiff of vaseline and little nail polish remover. It aint pretty........

                              Tom,

Given those other choices, Natashia's offer sounds pretty good!
