Pokal w/lacquer

Gents,

Submitted for your consideration a Luftwaffe Pokal with close to 90% of the remaining 'factory' lacquer!

I have collected and studied Pokals for over 20 years and this is the first I have seen with protective lacquer. Source documentation has yet to be discovered which proves that Pokals were indeed lacquered as part of the manufacturing process.

However, I can only surmise that lacquering was only applied to the ALPAKA versions and not to the earlier 'silver' cup versions.

If we apply the same logic the dagger barons use in pricing 'lacquered' 1st Model Luftwaffe daggers and swords, the price of a lacquered Pokal would be double that of a Pokal exhibiting no remaining lacquer!

The 'bowl' on the Pokal in the following pictures appears polished but, it is not. What you are seeing is the lacquer reflecting off the light of the camera. I have tried to show the contrast using the eagles as some laquer has been worn-off exposing the patinated silver.

Lastly, the Pokal was awarded to Adolf Bobsien, Unteroffizier in STUKA Geschwader 77 and German Cross in Gold recipient.

In this picture you can clearly see the contrast between the exposed patinated silver and the lacquered silver.

In this picture of the stem, you can clearly see the 'white bands' of lacquer along the presentation band and the top band too include touches of lacquer remaining on the O/L.

Inside

The most fascinating part of the Pokal, the inside of the cup is almost 100% lacquered. You can clearly see the two scratches in the lacquer at the bottom of the cup on the left side exposing the patinated silver.

Thanks for your posting.

Helmut Weitze's descirption clearly indicates that this is a protective coating applied most likely after the war.

This clearly is not period applied lacquer.
