It is possible that there was never an eagle attached to this piece. I have seen an article in a german magazine that stated that near to the end of the war there were no stocks of eagles left. The hole for the rivet was filled with a blank and then the whole eagle stamped over again to give it more detail, looking at the piece shown it sure looks as if there is a lot more detail in it that in badges were the eagle has fallen off, as these are usually just the smooth outline of the eagle.

Skip, you maybe know that I am usually an "Imperial Guy" and don't have the big knowledge about 3. Reich stuff, but at first I thought the same. Is it possible to scan this article and mail it? Very very good and useful information, thanks!!!

        Hi Jens,

I will look through my files this evening to see if I can find it, although it should´nt be that hard to obtain for you. It was the Militaria Magazin, which I am sure you have seen around at shows and such.

If that is the case, it would make this badge somwhat of a rarity...right

But the hole for the rivet is not filled in on Jens´ badge as the article suggests. Plus, the rivet is actually there. Why put a rivet into a badge that is not intended to have an attached eagle?

Well I don´t have the article here at the moment Frank, and I believe they said that a rivet was inserted in the hole, don´t take that for gospel though.
Don´t you think that the eagle has to much detail just to be the place were the extra eagle was mounted?
I have seen other Luft GABs were the eagle had been renoved to denazify them and they had no feathering in the eagle at all.

                Dear Skip,

I have never seen a "Juncker" type LW-GAB without the eagle application, so I cannot comment on what that eagle looks like underneath!

                  Fair enough Frank,
the ones I have seen were also not of this type.
anyway I was only providing another possibility, maybe the eagle really did just fall off.
However I still think that it has an exceptional amount of detail just to be covered over with another eagle.
Anybody want to pull the eagle off their example to see what it looks like underneath?

Here are exactly these two badges (Flak and Ground Assault) in wear by the owner. It seems that there was even in 1942 no eagle attached to this badge:

                      Looks like the single rivet:

As you can see in the pictures this guy also had the Ostmedaille but it is missing in the group. Would you add one to complete this group?

instead of putting in a dummy rivet to fill the hole, and then restampingt he badge, wouldnt it be easier to just knock off the stud that made the hole?

presuming of course that it was stamped out with the badge to beign with, and not drilled by hand..

Accidentally offending people on the internet since 1997

                            Thanks for all opinions!
But would you add a Ostmedaille to re-complete the group?

In this thread on posting number 9 Mark clearly states that he has an Osang Luft GAB were the eagle has fallen off. Under the eagle is no detail at all, just a blank space.
Still the opinion that Jens example has been stamped over to give the eagle detail.

Jens, you might as well buy yourself an Ostmedaille to complete the set, nothing wrong with that IMO.

ps. sorry, could´nt find the Militaria Magazin with the Luft GAB article, somebody probably borrowed it and did´nt bring it back.
