    Opinions on this Close Range Nightfighter clasp

    This is an unmarked example, but I believe that was common. What do you guys think?

    I'll also ask the obvious question, what is to prevent someone from taking a day fighters clasp and painting the wreath black to increase the value? I assume it has been done, but is there a way to really tell the difference between that deception and an original nightfighter clasp?

      This clasp looks fine to me.

      To answer your question, there is nothing to prevent someone from painting one of these. Although some were painted before the arrow went on, some were painted later (just transforming a day fighter into a night fighter). All you can do is look at the paint and, in the absence of actual paint analysis, try your best to see if you can determine if the paint is original to it or not. My experience has been that short range fighter bars do not differ so much in price as to make a big deal out of it. For the long range fighters, all are uncommon, so you should be glad to find either day or night versions. If you can find one with paint under the arrow, so much the better, but I wouldn't advise you to lose any sleep over it.

          Nightfighter clasp

          Hi guys,

          Thanks for the opinions and info. I just wanted to get a feeling from some of you guys that know about the paint issue. I appreciate it.

            There have been a number of R.K. marked clasps that show a consistency in the black paint, meaning they most likely left the factory as Nachtspangen.

              I absolutely agree with this. Picked up several "RK" night fighter clasp from a New Zealand veteran who took them at the end of the war after getting out of a POW camp. The camp was not far from a LW base and the POW's went looking for food etc. When they came across the awards & badges, they filled up some pillow cases and took them back to the camp. These badges were poured out into the middle of the camp and anyone who wanted some helped themselves. There was any interesting array of both badges, cuff titles and makers but all the night fighters were "RK"

              These RK's show a consistency in the black paint used, application, wear and tear.

              Would be interesting to make a listing of the known makers or styles of clasps which have a factory applied black finish. RK is certainly one of them,

                The comments about RK clasps are correct based on the ones I have seen. This maker also used a very distinct, and to my understanding unique, leaf pattern on its clasps.

                  Yep, here are a couple of mine....bronze and silver.
                  I have not had a chance to photograph the gold one.

                  R.K. Clasps, although zinc, are very high quality.
                  There seems to be a plating over the zinc.
                  And yes they have a very distinctive style to their leaf pattern.

                  In fact, I just went through my files and of all the pics of R.K. spangen that I've saved over the years.....all are black wreathed!

                  Does anybody have an R.K. Spange that is NOT a nightfighter clasp?

                    I was going to comment about that same point, but I'm not 100% sure. All I can say is that I'VE never seen, personally, an R.K. that was not for a nightfighter.

                      About 25 years ago I had four R.K.-marked clasps. Nightfighters all of them. They all had the same black paint. I have only seen R.K.-marked clasps as nightfighters.
