I am just curious how rare those aluminium (Juncker) pieces are??

Hi Martin,

In THAT condition with no repairs, I'd say these days it is extremely uncommon.

Agree, the case (more to the point the writing) is unusual, but I like the look of the inserts. I get the impression that the badge does not sit in the insert properly though?

1st pattern Juncker PB in aluminum is extremely rare, especially in that condition.

A very nice badge indeed. Hard to find in any condition and with the catch still on.....

Nothing wrong with the case either. Have seen and handeled a few of those with the "crazy worm" type covering. I think they are fine and seldom seen on the market. Congrats.

Killer Badge brought to life by your photos Martin! I wonder when these Aluminum wreath badges were released? I would think mid 1944?
Also can any member tell me were PO badges released in aluminum? I saw one (Yea Sure it was) at the Portland Or. June 7th Gun show...
The seller wanted $800.00 US for it, and I am sure it was a fake!
So do any members know about when Juncker went to Aluminum? and if any PO badges were made as such? I would think so!
Again... One very nice Juncker there Martin!!!! Even the pin catch looks straight!! Could you post a photo showing the catch and also hinge? Thanks!

Good evening Kevin,

As you know Luftwaffe badges are not my area but I noted this in the war badge section at the front of the web site...

"As with most Third Reich items, the pilot badge can be found in materials of different quality. Aluminum, nickel-silver, plated tombak, plated alloy and lacquered zinc were all used. Pre and early war versions tend to be executed in high quality nickel and tombak, while the mid to late war pieces tend to be of the alloy and zinc variety. Aluminum was used in the late 1930’s, but was rather quickly deemed unsuitable."

The section on PO badges mentions aluminum was used there as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks Stu! I should have guessed early war! As with every scrap of Aluminum being used for aircraft production etc... The metal would be to precious late war for badge production.
And the obvious durability faults of aluminum would... as you mention be quickly realized when used as such!

Early thin 1st pattern juncker, would be pre war. I like the case which usually has a raised centre section to match the shape of the badge
