i personally when asked for help in understanding something, am willing to try and explain what to look at to help the person understand. i do see differences in the badge posted here, and the one in the thread. so is the idea that all assman observers are exactly alike with out any varences ? for example the assman A ,will all assman badges be indented and not raised ?
i was under the impression that this site was about collecting. and usually collectors are more friendly in sharing information, ( at least that has been my experence untill now). if you are unwilling or unable to answer a reasonable question by another collector. perhaps it would be better not to post a responce. why waste your time or others if your not going to answer anyway. i just know when i'm asked for help, i just give what i can. most people learn faster if they have help in pointing out what to look for.
i am recently finding out that some badge makers sold parts to other smaller companies. W.Deumer is an example. they sold eagles, marked and unmarked to smaller cottage assemblers. so i'm told anyway.
on dealer sites i have seen differences in assman observers badges. the eagles left wing tip varies in shape. correct or not i dont know. and i find books are not always the final answer.
i started collecting daggers about 30 years ago, so if you have any questions about them , feel free to ask, and expect an answer . and not be told to go learn for your self.

Sorry you were put off by my response, but you'll learn far more using the search function than can be explained in one post. However, I'll try to cover the highlights for you: Yes, Assmann maker marks can be of the raised variety, but they're not usually as pronounced as shown on the above badge (see example below). The wreath design is unlike known Assmann originals (yes, a second-patten Assmann wreath should look like the one in the picture I pointed you to), while the one shown above has manufacturing characteristics of known reproductions (wrong type of metal, flat back, lack of hand-finishing, etc.). Assmann rivets (large, spun, and pointy) are somewhat unique among badge makers, and a bit more difficult to reproduce effectively. The hinge on badge above is soldered directly to the wreath as would be found on buntmetal badges, but the catch is soldered to a base-plate - a characteristic found on zinc badges. IMO, the wreath on the above badge is neither buntmetal or zinc.

Thank you Scott. some times we come across items for sale, and time is limited as well as knowledge. being a blade collector my self, i know very little about badges,they are not my main interest. but on occasion i come across one and would like the opinions of others, as well as my own. and thank you for the explenation. i really am curious about parts sharing of badge makers. if you have any insight or a direction to point me in for information here. i'm just looking to learn. and who says ya cant teach old dog's new tricks lol.
P.S. Scott it was not your post that put me off. its the "its fake" responces. the person asking would usually like a little more than that, dont you think ?

Hi David,

I don't think any member here meant to sound rude and not answer any questions, but you have to realize something, especially as a new member; that many of us have been asked the same questions over and over again, sometimes on the same type badge. This site started several years ago and the administrator has taken several steps to ensure that we have the capability to handle a large database and server requirements to handle archived threads and pictures just for members to have that knowledge at their fingertips.

So, don't be surprised if a few are not always anxious to jump right in and reinvent the wheel each time a question is asked. Besides, part of collecting is doing ones own research and learning by comparison of like items and learning how to distingush good from bad. Considering that many members started years ago before the internet, it's hard to complain now that a person only has to turn on the computer and get more information than most guys had when they started out years ago and had to get down in the trenches to glean that knowledge. We all owe those collectors a great deal!

Last note: IMO, it is not a good habit to just ask others for thier opinions and go from that word alone. Study and learn and form your own opinions based on your acquired knowledge, you'll enjoy your collection that much more.

please dont misunderstand my point. i have run into to many people that think they know it all, and are quick to shoot something down with out good reason. i have no stake in the badge in question. but i have seen people told "its fake" only to be told by others in the same thread its real. i just hate to see a collector shot down with out a reason. and i was trying to learn a little too. sorry if i came off harsh.
