    Maker of this box?

    Hello,

I bought this set today from the daughter of the pilote who was shot down over England.

As I looked at the box I saw a strange "g" in the word "Kampfflieger".

Does the unusual "g" tell anything about the maker?

    Thanks
    Klaus

Hello Klaus - I do not know if the flocking is removable from the case but usually you will find numbers and letters there that might give the case experts a clue. Don't take it apart if it is not already loose though. The clasps look nice - can we see some close-ups? The lettering is indeed unusual; I have never seen it before or in any threads. Richard

I have never seen that style 'g' before, but I do like the material on both cases.

There's no way of telling who made the case really, KB made bases and it is highly thought of they supplied the shells as well as perhaps makeing cases per se. I'll explain more on this another day.

We do as collectors tend to define cases as KB at times (myself included) which is part right and wrong in part - literally.

It is highly thought that KB also supplied unmarked bases, pre and during the war there are also unidentified bases a many too.

D&B we can assume constructed the cases via the part code system. So unless you took out the base and it was D&B it's a lost cause really I'm afraid.

It's been harder to distinguish unmarked D&B bases, as on latter war cases we've found the odd unmarked unidentifiable case (outer covering and construction) with a D&B base alone.

There were thousands of paper mills in Germany prior to and during WW2, large and small. There are several main very large paper mill firms that catored for cases and boxes of wooden/cardboard construction at that - they to also did packets as well and the outer coverings, printing, stencils etc etc (I say paper mills collectively for ease in English)

This is only roughly you understand: I'm corresponding with a source or two for the book on cases & packets about firms their names and locations etc Some of the pictures of a well known packet maker/ box maker of the complex are amazing, it was a very very large site with numerous large buildings !!! (I don't own the pic's yet)

When more is known properly, I'll divulge some very interesting findings for the community - this is work for the book you understand, but once I am at a stage I'l reveal most for you all.

In regard to this letter, to be honest I'm not sure if I have seen this before or not - I have the feeling I have and will search my files for you.

I must add though there are more conversed guys on Luft cases than I, I've not come to terms with them all yet and these have been a problem to research if honest and they are still ongoing as it is confusing for me.

            Kr

            Marcus

PS Can we pop this thread in the cases and packets forum, where I can keep an eye on it for the future please
