I recently picked up and ASSMANN Pilot Badge from an estate. I am pretty sure it is 100% original. it was found in France late in the war.
I know NOTHING about these badges...so I am hoping that someone here can help with some questions I have.
The badge itself is an overall "grey" in appearance. The eagle is slightly brighter however. When I first saw it, I thought someone painted it...but after close inspection I think it is just a very old patina. The traditionad stylized "A" is on the back , with a very faint L/64.
The backside is curious. The pin, hinge, and clasp and the area the pin was soldered, has remained a sort of "yellow" in appearance. i don't know if the material they used to weld the thing together, or if they used a different material for these pieces. It also looks somewhat "sloppy".
if the photos aren't working, try this link...I've having problems with Geocities...

I may have to take some better photos as these are a we bit blurry.
I've read in a lot of threads to either never clean, or clean gently with soapy water, however...isn't this a LOT of patina? Shouldn't the wreath be gold?
Also, what kind of insurance value should I be placing on this?
Thanks!!!
Mike
