Sorry, but I agree with Don on this one. Despite the out-of-focus pictures, enough is visible to see that the hinge is very crude and is made of the same gray metal as the rest of the badge. I also believe that the badge is a casting and that the hinge is an integral part of that casting, rather than a separate attachment. I also have a feeling that the eagle is cast together with the wreath rather than being a separate, soldered on part. When this badge was first posted, Marc made mention of the fact that the catch looked a bit off. I agree with that too and, in addition, its attachment does not look correct either.

    Jason,

My apologies for chiming in so late on this thread, but this is the first time I came across it. I would suggest taking a magnet to that hinge. Not the hinge pin but the hinge itself. I have a feeling that it will be non-magnetic just like the rest of the badge. It would have been helpful too, if you would have followed through with the measurements and weight request. It seems to me like everyone was trying to be positive about your badge and to give it the benefit of the doubt, but those comments were all based on blurry images. I think measurements, clear photos, and in-hand examination would only confirm my suspicions. In my opinion, this badge is fake. However, if better pictures prove me wrong, I will be the first to apologize to you.

    Best regards,
    Tom

      Hi Jason,

We need to see a clear picture of the hinge like this one:

Fine. Thanks for the help and info. I have tried to post clear pictures, but I am not as skilled photographer as everyone else here. I tried the magnet test and it is non-magnetic.

I thank everyone for the input and while the results are so far 50/50 I have removed it from the estand. I would not want to sell an item that would be questionable.

Can you post weight and measurements so we can check for casting?

Marc: I will try to do that, but since we moved I have lost contact with my friend who has all those tools.

I have come to the sad understanding that I am a rotten photographer. Thank God that digital cameras don't use film because I would have burned up rolls trying to get a good picture. Here are a few more of my photos I tried to take.

So I am learning that the hinge should not be made from the same medal as the badge, correct? If that is the case, than this hinge is no good. I am sure it is made of the same material as the badge, or at least close enough to it.

Since this badge was given to me by a customer who knew I was "into this sort of stuff" in thanks for so work I did for him I am not out any money, just some time.

Cast in hinge for sure. Not a good sign.

Thank you for the offer Marc, I would take you up on this but I can't send it to you as I sold it for $30 this for afternoon to another forum member.

Please send me your address as I do have something for you.
