    LW Pilot badge

Does this look OK or is it a candidate for the fake files. Seems to lack detail, hinge is smaller than normal for these badges. Opinions please.

Bob, this looks like a good unknown maker to me. The hinge is the right size for the tombak versions, like this one. It is in very good shape except for the hits the eagle has taken.

Any more opinions? The hinge is in fact noticeably narrower by about 0.08 to 0.10 centimeters. I also note that where the pin going thru the hinge normally looks like it has been flattened on the head (facing the right when looking at the rear) this one does not have that prominent flattening. Other measurements seem to be OK but my calipers are in inches and a really cheap piece.
Looking for a few more folks to stand up and commit to yes or no. Maybe I am looking to closely for differences. Thanks in advance.

Hi Bob, many aspects of this badge point to it being original. Having said that I would not want it. The "hits" whatever the hell they are, look very bad. The eagles head is somewhat mangled. What would cause such damage? The reverse of the eagle looks weird to me, and the hits might very well be casting flaws. This is either a screwed up original or a fake with pretty good hardware. These badges are common enough to hold out for a nicer one. best wishes,

            Bob,
I would agree with Jeff on this one. I am by no means an expert, but I would not want this badge in this condition, even if it is authentic. The eagle looks flat to me, and the reverse looks like someone took a grinder to it. Just my opinion. What is the asking price anyway?

Asking price on it is 325.00. Not bad if original even if dinged up. I still am on the fence re: good or bad. Thanks all, Bob.

I think if it is questionable to you then you have answered your own question. I have jumped the gun a few times and ended up with a piece that I was not happy with down the road. You are better off waiting, there is a nicer one just around the corner!

                  Brian,
You are right. Better safe than sorry. I already have too many pilot badges and don't need this maker(unknown maybe FLL maker) as I already have a good tombac and zinc one. Sometimes you just get caught up in the hunt.
                  Thanks to all.
