Both look like very nice badges in nice early cases to me John.

How about a front pic of the second one though?
(I think you just switched pics. huh)

            Two PBs

            John

Two nice looking J2s, particularly the second example. The cases are in good condition too.

            Best regards,

What do you guys think of the back of number 2 - does that look like a repair to you?

Are you referring to the hinge? A close-up would be useful to give a meaningful opinion. Certainly the obverse looks nice and clean.

Hi John. Nice badges. IMO, the second badge looks to have a repaired hinge-pin area, the 'C' catch looks like it's on backwards, and I can't tell if the rivets are the flat-top variety. The first badge has all the looks of an un-messed with badge with good character. Tough to be certain about the cases without more pics, although the push-button gizmos on both seem to lack any age patina.

@ Scott - good eye on the catch I missed that - and you are correct about the area in question - that material looks like copper and a brass solder.

@ Tim here are some better pictures or the best I have.

IMO the hinge on the second badge is fine. Copper is fairly
common on J2 hinges and being off center is OK too.

My main concern with the second badge ~ the eagle's face
seems to have been smacked around. Not an originality issue,
                      just a shame.

Also, I think the clasp being backwards is just an illusion.
If it was, notice where the right side would attach to the
wreath, almost too high to be a possibility.

Thanks for all the replies - I am on the fence on this one - its a tough decision with quality and cost to balance out, but will make a decision by this weekend.

                        Thanks

                        John
