                Hi Richard,

Well, I guess I'll jump in first.

This is the first Assmann Glider I have ever seen, I like what I see. The rivets are typical for Assmann. Maker mark looks good from the small pic. I also like the cut out swastika and overall detailing. Finally, I think the little angled cuts in the wing detailing is consistant with other Assmann badges, specifically their Luft flak badges.

                Tom D.
If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Hi Richard, Never heard of one of these being discussed before

either.I do like the overall appearance of the badge & thought the same as

Tom on the rivets. The hinge also looks good,i guess you could compare it with

another Assman badge in your collection to see how it matches up.The MM

looks a bit smaller than usual to me,but could just be my eyes getting old!!!

How about a pic of the catch??

                  Regards,Ron

Unusual and unheard of, but somewhat convincing.

I like the rivets a lot.

Can we have a BIG scan of the eagles head and body please?

                        Difficult huh

                          Hi,

I have to say I like what I see so far. Yes, a first for me as well, but thinking about it Assmann produced all the other LW qualification badges so why not the Glider Pilot as well. The obverse detail looks very crisp. I like the raised maker mark, although by the early 40s the stamped mark seems to have dominanted Assmann LW badges. I like the patchy dark red patina, which I've seen on a few worn original badges before.

One good thing is that neither the eagle nor the wreath are pretending to be a Juncker, from which a lot of the high end castings seem to be derived from.

I would like to see some side shots of the hinge to gauge the outer barrel/hinge pin diameters. Would also like to see what the catch looks like.

                          Regards
                          Mike

                            glider piltos badge

                            Hello,

Well it will look that i am one of the non likers at this point. let me resume a bit with both pro and contra's :

                            Pro:

                            * The badge looks well made (rivets, pin, etc ... maker mark) at first sight.

                            Contra:

A point that i do not like from the pictures provided is the rather soft detail on the wings from the eagle. Mayby crystal clear pictures can convince this scepticus? (Does other "A" made Lw. products have this feature?)

What material is the badge produced from?

I do not follow the theory that when Assmann did produce all other badges they also could have produced the glider piltos badge. We have to be aware that there was not much need for glider badges (there was a low qualification percentage in the Lw. and not much where awarded). There are 2 major producers known (C.E.Juncker and BSW). Both can be proven 100 % both from proveniances as from original period pictures.

Why would a company take a risk and make tooling to produce a badge that is not likely to find much chance of being awarded or bought ? You can compare the gliders badge with the Heer Falschirmschutzen Abzeichen.

So much for now and always interested in learning.

                            Cordial greetings,

                              Hi Stijn,

While I somewhat agree with you that from all we know today, there didn't seem for a need for too many of these awards to be made. In hindsight, realistically only 1 maker could have produced all the badges ever needed for the glider awardees. But as you said, there are 2 definate makers Juncker & BSW that are 100% proven. If there are 2, there is possibility to be more. Assmann was a prevelant maker of Luft badges and would have been among the first companies selected to make this badge.

The clincher for me is the angle cuts in the bottom feathering of the wings. Assmann Luft Flak badges have this same exact feature. Both also feature the raised logo, not stamped. For a faker to include this subtle detail to match the maker mark on the reverse would show a stunning level of sophistications IMO.
