    Pilot Badge Case

    Hi,

This case arrived with a late-war zinc PO badge - obviously mismatched. I have not seen a LW case of this colour before (it's black) but it's old, the case material underneath the black covering is the typical yellowish colour seen on known original cases, the hinge and catch are steel, the inserts are of "furred" paper (?spurfritz? sp), the lower insert appears to be of non-moulded cardboard (poorly fitted) and nothing responds to UV light. I can't see any traces of glue and the lower insert is held firmly in place.

Is this a genuine late-war case variation or is it simply an old repro?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Regards
    Mike K

I'm not so sure it's bad. I have a virtually identical case that came from an add I put in our local paper several years ago that contained a late, zinc GWL Pilot's Badge. While that certainly doesn't make it real, I've always believed it to be original. That being said, it's absolutely an economy class item.

          Original to me

          Dear All,

From my experience it is an original case. Both inserts are ok for this type. I have two of them in my collection. One came, via picker, from the vet's widow with a mint GWL PB in it; not sure if they originaly came together as the guy had four PBs. The other from a reliable source.

Funny, I thought they were a rare type but it seems they are very common.

          Best regards,
          Al

            I like it

            Hello,

Well it is OK to disagree I guess but I like this kind of Case, the Spruhfilz looks authentic, etc ... the same is true for the push button, etc ...

            Just my humble opinion offcoarse

              My vote is...

.. that this style is late war and real. I have 4 different Junckers Air Gunner Badges, all cased. One is a late war case, just like this. Having said that, maybe what Francois meant was he didn't like it, not that it was fake. I can tell you, I don't like mine either, but I don't doubt it's authenticity.

                Hi,

Many Thanks for your responses guys!

My initial reaction upon seeing it was that the black colour made it bad, however everything else looked OK (apart from the poorly fitted lower insert). If the response was all negative I was prepared to rip the case apart in the interests of our hobby but I won't be doing that now!!

Very heartening to hear that there are some other cases out there with reasonable provenance.

                Live and Learn!!
