Seeking infor on the Kampfgeschwader 51 edelweiss

Would anyone have any information on the use of the Kampfgeschwader 51 edelweiss emblem? Was it worn on a uniform as a cloth patch? Or painted on to their planes? Any period photos would be ideal.

It was painted on their planes, and I seem to recall some members of the unit had an Edelweiss sewn to their overseas caps too.

      Hello,

Here is an old pic. You should get this excellent book (in German). There is a photo on the picture with the "Edelweiss" painted on a bomber. Let me know if you want it bigger.

Thank you all for the excellent information and photos. The metal edelweiss on the cap looks like the same one that was worn by the Gebirgsjager on the M43 cap.
The really interesting thing is that the Kampfgeschwader 51 edelweiss emblem appears to have been worn as a collar tab on the tunic (unless I am mistaken). The emblem on the collar seems to be similar to the one that is illustrated on the cover page of the book, in that it has a pointed base, not a rounded base as in my illustration. It is difficult to tell, but is the collar tab the same on both sides? If anyone has some more photos, please post them.
          Regards
          Ian

The Edelweiss is the same sew-on type you mention. The collar tabs are the normal style rhombus, with bullion gulls and wreath denoting officer ranks.

              Thanks Gene,
Chalk that one up to a blurry photo and poor eyesight on my part!
They really look like the edelweiss 51 emblem in the photo...
