Little documentation exists and numbers awarded. The only picture I know of that is absolutely irrefutable is Kleitman's on page 187 of Auszeichnungen des Deutschen Reiches.

According to Kleitmann, "Der plastisch gearbeitere Kranz ist in hell Aluminium, der Adler in oxydierter Stickerei und das Hakendreuz aus blankem Gespinst".
My eagle is oxidised per Herr Kleitmann's words directly from whatever ministry told the manufacturer EXACTLY how to produce the award.Last edited by Brian S; 01-12-2003, 01:00 PM.

We need someone who has studied the true origins of these awards to chime in. If Kleitmann is right, Forman is wrong. Forman states the first type is a "quality plated badge". Kleitmann quotes the Reichsluftfahrtministerium from the Herbst 1940 document. I would go with Kleitmann on this one myself. Precise measurements of the badge are included. I get back I'll photo the Kleitmann page and post it here. Anyone who can speak some German will get it.Last edited by Brian S; 01-12-2003, 12:59 PM.

You/re right BUT; "Aus Metall: ...In der oberen Halfte des Kranzes aufgesetzt ein OXYDIERTER, segelnder massiver Adler." Translating even further, the "Scharniernadel" or the pin that sticks to the uniform is ALSO oxidized.
This is where Detlev needs to chime in as he would be aware of the LATER versions if indeed any other versions exist.
Maybe I need more definition of 'oxidized'. Are any of the badges that have a smoked dark color considered oxidized????
Here's an oxydized eagle;

Hi Brians,
Could you post a reverse image of your example? I'd like to see the hinge/pin/catch construction. Looking at the obverse of the eagle, it has the appearance of zinc in the images so I'm wondering if yours is of later manufacture?
