Opinions Please, Aluminum Assmans Pilots Badge ,

    Hello Gentlemen,

I would kindley appriciate your thoughts and opinions on this Aluminum Pilots bagde marked Assmans. The pics are a little washed out, but the meat of what is to be seen is decernable. The scan are not my own, they are the sellers.

The example is made from aluminium, reef silver plated, eagle brunished, with manufacturer "A"for Assmann, the brunishing of the eagle lightly worn, silvered reef has light tarnish, eagle rivet, with wide hinge and round threadneedle, the piece is somewhat worn. In addition the revers has the name of the recipient engraved in it , but it was polished out along the line so it is only partcially seen. The price point is $685.00.

    Thank you in advance,
    JD

I have problems with this badge:

        1. The hinge is too high.

        2. The catch is wrong for an aluminum badge. This looks like a brass "C" wire catch, but Assmann alum. badges that I've seen have a catch similar to alum. Luft. Summer tunic breast eagles.

        3. The rivets are unlike any that I've seen on early Assmann badges.

          I say no

          Hi Joe,
I'm afraid I don't particularly like this one either - I know early Assmanns had a minor "dip" at the bottom center of the wreath, but IMO this one has too much "dip" above the bars for being aluminum.
I agree about the rivits and catch - a bit to funky for my liking! Another badge from H.W.? Are you sure it's aluminum?

IMO this badge is good. However only the eagle is aluminium. The wreath is tombak that's why the hinge looks too high and the catch of the 'wrong' type.

As for the dip, looks perfectly OK for an Assmann tombak wreath to me!

Here's a 'full' alu Assmann, and to follow one of the combo badges...

...tombak/Alu combo (Though the eagle could be zinc I'm truely not sure!)

I agree with Richard. This is an original Assman Pilots badge with either an aluminum or zinc eagle and a tombak wreath.
                    Best regards,

                    Tony

Hello and thank you for the responses,

I felt that this pices was a keeper , but I was also concerned about the combination of aluminum and Tomback, I really did not now. I knew that Assman made a drooped wreath in their earlier examples, as a result of a visit with Eric S. who was kind enough to go over the smallest details in my LW collection (Thanks Again , Eric). I really needed some imput from the pros on this one, it was a first for me in seeing a combo piece, but I did not want to pass it up. The piece comes from Carsten Baldes, I missed out on the GWL pilots badge he had up this week, what a beauty that was. Just cannot find a GWL Pilots or Observers.

Richard, thank you especially for posted the two sets up pics, I know that many will benefit from it as well as myself. This will also be an important addition to my archive pics.

                      Best Regards,
                      JD
